Brakspear supports first Henley Club to Pub swim
June 6, 2014
Brewer and pub operator Brakspear is supporting Henley’s first ever ‘Club to Pub’ Swim, taking place on 9 August. All finishers in the 1.5km swim will receive a bottle of ‘Two Bells’, a 3.7% ABV golden ale specially brewed by Brakspear to mark the event, and will be invited to join a party and barbecue at the Angel on the Bridge, the end point for the swim.
The Club to Pub Swim is the latest addition to Henley’s series of summer swims. It is open to swimmers of all levels, though the challenge is to complete the course between the 7 o’clock evening chime of St. Mary the Virgin church which will signal its start, and the next one at 8 o’clock – hence the name of Two Bells for the commemorative beer, which will be brewed at Brakspear’s Bell Street Brewery at the Bull on Bell Street.
Brakspear chief executive Tom Davies said, “Life in Henley revolves around the river and the summer swims are a popular fixture for many residents of the town and further afield. We’re delighted that Henley Swim has chosen to end this new event at one of our pubs, the Angel on the Bridge, which is such a landmark in the town.
“Completing a 1.5km swim within an hour is an achievement that we felt should be rewarded. The bottles of Two Bells will quench the swimmers’ thirsts and provide them with a lasting memory of this first ever Club to Pub swim. We hope they enjoy them, and the party and barbecue at the pub.”
The swim starts at Henley Rowing Club. Swimmers head upstream to Marsh Lock, then turn back downstream to the Angel on the Bridge, with the fastest expected to complete the course in around 30 minutes. As well as a bottle of Brakspear’s Two Bells, all finishers will receive a medal which cleverly doubles as a bottle opener so they can enjoy their post-swim brew straight away.
Mark Dunlop, tenant at The Angel on the Bridge, said “The Angel is a very well-known pub because of its beautiful setting on the river. We’re hoping the Club to Pub swim becomes just as well-known and attracts even more people to enjoy a pint or two at the Angel.”
Jeremy Laming of Henley Swim said, “Key local businesses such as Brakspear are important partners for Henley Swim and we have enjoyed working with them on the Club to Pub Swim. They have been extremely positive and welcoming. Once the event is over and all of the swimmers are safely out of the Thames, you will see me enjoying a bottle of Two Bells.”
