Three pubs win best in their counties

Three Brakspear pubs are celebrating ahead of the bank holiday weekend, after being named the best in their respective counties from the 2022 National Pub & Bar awards. The Joker in Brighton won best pub in East Sussex, the George Townhouse won in Warwickshire and the Frogmill picked up the award for Gloucestershire.

The National Pub & Bar Awards aims to put exemplary on-trade businesses across the UK in the national spotlight, showcasing the hospitality industry’s diversity, creativity and vital importance to the UK economy. Being named one of 94 pubs to claim a County Winner title across the UK, is no mean feat. More than 500 British pubs entered the 2022 Awards and each was judged on everything from interior design to outside space, customer service, menus, and drinks lists.

Tristan O’Hana, editor of Pub & Bar magazine, which runs the National Pub & Bar Awards, said: “This is an industry that never stands still – the operators of the best pubs have to be at the top of their game 100% of the time. Our  County Winners are shining examples of that energy and creativity. They are what makes the pubs and bars of the UK so renowned.”

Nathan Moseby is in his first year of trading at the Joker in Brighton with his business partner Adam Smith and describes the pub as a neighbourhood cocktail pub. Nathan said “We’re so surprised to get the award. We love the Joker and have been here less than a year so we still have loads more plans for it, so to receive this award already really is an honour. We’re glad people like what we do and hope that continues.” The Joker is a stylish and eccletic pub serving burgers, wings and loaded fries, and boasts an upper floor with cocktail bar perfect for hosting parties for up to 90 people.

The George Townhouse is a Grade II listed building on Shipston’s High Street. We’ve worked hard to make the George the ‘go-to’ pub locally, whether you want a quick drink, a leisurely meal or an overnight stay.”
