The Bull on Bell Street reopens for business
April 6, 2013
The Bull on Bell Street in Henley-on-Thames has reopened after a complete refurbishment of this iconic town centre pub.
The listed building was part of the original brewery at various points in its 700-year history. It was trading under the name Ko-Ko’s until closing for redevelopment in January.
Brakspear chief executive Tom Davies said, “The Bull has been one of Henley’s best-known pubs for centuries and it has been a joy to restore it. We’re confident that it will quickly become a favourite among residents and visitors to the town, offering top quality food and drink, a relaxed atmosphere and professional, attentive service.”
The refurbishment has created a ‘traditional pub meets modern brasserie’ feel at the Bull, which will now seat 190 customers. It preserves much of the building’s heritage while adding a contemporary feel with, for example, glass walls to maximise natural light and low sofas for informal gatherings. Outside, a large patio offers booths for drinking and dining, while a private function room at the rear of the pub comes with its own outdoor area.
Food is a big part of the Bull’s offer and Brakspear has recruited an outstanding chef in Wayne Pegler who worked with Marco-Pierre White at his Canteen restaurant in London. From weekend brunch to afternoon tea, lunchtime sandwiches and light bites to a more formal evening menu, every dining occasion is catered for.
Drinks match the food in quality and variety, with a range of Brakspear cask ales, bottled beers and cocktails as well as an interesting list of wines and Champagnes.
Overseeing the Bull on Bell Street is new general manager Tuesdee Dixon, who has an impressive track record in the pub industry, including two years as general manager at Heston Blumenthal’s Hinds Head in Bray. Assistant manager Sophie Kilgour also worked at the Hinds Head, as well as for the Three Oaks, a gastropub in Gerrards Cross. The opening of the Bull has created a total of 18 jobs for local people.
Davies said, “We’re excited about the Bull on Bell Street, which gives customers another quality option for drinking and dining in Henley. We expect it to attract more people into the town, where we’re sure they will visit our many other fine pubs.”
The Bull on Bell Street will be open from 11.00 – 11.00 Mondays through to Saturdays and from midday to 10.30 on Sundays. Food will be served from opening til 9.00 pm.
