‘Battle of the Wellingtons’ at Brakspear Golf Day
The recent Brakspear Golf Day saw two ‘Wellingtons’ battle for top place, with the team from the Wellington Arms in Sandhurst narrowly beating the Duke of Wellington, Twyford on a tie breaker. Both teams scored 93, but the Wellington Arms won on countback, achieving a better score – by just one point – on the last six holes.
Teams from Henley pub the Angel on the Bridge took third and place and a team from Brakspear head office finished fifth out of a field of 17 teams from a number of Brakspear pubs, and suppliers. Although no players managed a hold in one this year, the ‘closest to the pin’ accolade went to Olivier Jollie of Moet on Hole 7.
This was the third Golf Day hosted by Brakspear, and the event has become a popular fixture for regulars from their pubs across the region. Held at Henley Golf Club in Harpsden, the event includes 18 holes of golf as well as food and drink both to sustain players round the course and back at the club house.
The Wellington Arms team were rewarded with a generous haul of prizes from Brakspear, including a firkin of Brakspear Bitter for the pub, and for each team member a mini-trophy, bottle of champagne and a voucher for two to play at Henley Golf Club. Winners and second placed teams also received some Brakspear beer, as well as other prizes, and everyone taking part in the tournament went home with a bag of Brakspear goodies.
Tom Davies, Brakspear chief executive, said, “It was a pleasure to bring the Brakspear Golf Day back for a third year and bring together landlords and customers to enjoy great golf, beer and food and the company of fellow golfers.
“It was good to see customers playing for the Brakspear Golf Shield, and I know it will be occupying pride of place in the Wellington Arms for the next year. This affection from regulars for their local is what makes our pubs so special and the Golf Day is a great way to reward those customers, and our landlords.”
